Animal Lovers Chip in to Help Birds through Winter

Residents of Jilin in the northeastern province by the same name donated more than 10 tons of grain as food for migrant birds along the Songhua River.

Thousands of water birds flew to the river recently to spend the winter.

Their numbers have soared in recent days and some warm-hearted residents are worried whether there is enough food for them.

When they appealed online for people to donate grain or money to help the birds through the winter, an outdoor sports club and dozens of local residents voluntarily organized the donation. Donors included an 8-year-old boy and two Canadians.
