A ship used in film director Peter Jackson's remake of film King Kong is set to be sunk in Cook Strait at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars to Wellington ratepayers.

The Venture II has been left abandoned at Miramar Wharf in the New Zealand capital of Wellington for years, and the Greater Wellington Regional Council has decided it is now a safety risk. It will be sunk on Tuesday.

Harbormaster Mike Pryce said in a press release that the vessel has been left at Miramar Wharf for the last five years. He said sinking the vessel will cost ratepayers 30,000 NZ dollars (20,550 U.S. dollars).

Pryce said the ship has had to be cleared of oil and anything that can float will be removed before sinking. He added that it will be sunk in a 1.7 km deep part of Cook Strait.
